This log is empty. Nothing has been published yet, so there is nothing yet to correct.
An empty log is a fact about the record rather than a gap in the page. The page exists before there is anything in it, because a corrections log first published on the day of the first correction is a log nobody can check.
The product is not built and the site is not open yet. Once items are published, every correction to one of them appears here, permanently, and no entry is ever taken down. The standard an item has to meet before it is published is set out on the methodology page.
What a correction is
An item version is immutable once it has been delivered. A corrected item is a new version, and the version that was read stays as it was read.
A correction is never a silent edit.
A correction is also an item in its own right. It travels every channel the original travelled, including a recap page that has already been shared and a licensee's white-label feed, so a reader who saw the mistake meets the correction on the same surface.
Every entry in this log records the same four things.
- What was wrong.
- What it now says.
- The cause: a source error, an extraction error, a writing error or an editing error.
- When it was corrected.
Reporting an error
An error in a published item can be sent to corrections@newsenough.com. Name the item, quote the sentence, and say what the record shows instead.
The claim is checked against the origin document. Where the item is wrong, the outcome is an entry in this log rather than a reply in private, because a correction made only to the person who found it is not a correction.
The right of reply
Any named body or office-holder may respond to a finding about them. The reply is free. It is verified by a domain email address or by an entry in an official register, and it appears on the item under the findings, in the same visual weight, up to 300 words.
The right of reply is not an appeal, it is not a route to removal and it is not a negotiation. Where a reply shows a fact is wrong, that is a correction, and it appears here with the rest.
